Mapping the Distortions in Time and Space: The French Railway Network 1830–1930
2013
International audience; Accessibility is frequently used in transportation planning to measure the efficiency of new infrastructure in terms of travel time and population served. In this article, the authors apply accessibility concepts based on the geo-historical angle. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationships between population dynamics and the railway expansion from 1830 to 1930. Their approach considers a local scale composed of some 36,000 French communes for the demographic data and more than 28,000 kilometers for the railway network. The methodological framework of this database is based on historical geographic information systems completed by anamorphosis analysis.…
Spatial distribution ofVespa velutinaindividuals hunting at domestic honeybee hives: heterogeneity at a local scale
2014
Since its recent introduction into Europe, the yellow-legged hornet, Vespa velutina, has become a major predator of the domestic honeybee, Apis mellifera, but little is known about its hunting behavior. We studied V. velutina hunting behavior by a capture-mark-recapture procedure in an experimental apiary. A total of 360 hornets were captured and tagged, and we determined: (i) the number of hornets visiting the apiary and the changes in time, (ii) the average number of individual visits per half-day and the time elapsed between consecutive recaptures, and (iii) the individual and global distribution of the hornets in the apiary. More than 50% of the marked hornets were recaptured at least o…
Geographical and temporal structures of Legionella pneumophila sequence types in comunitat valenciana (Spain), 1998 to 2013
2015
ABSTRACT Legionella pneumophila is an accidental human pathogen associated with aerosol formation in water-related sources. High recombination rates make Legionella populations genetically diverse, and nearly 2,000 different sequence types (STs) have been described to date for this environmental pathogen. The spatial distribution of STs is extremely heterogeneous, with some variants being present worldwide and others being detected at only a local scale. Similarly, some STs have been associated with disease outbreaks, such as ST578 or ST23. Spain is among the European countries with the highest incidences of reported legionellosis cases, and specifically, Comunitat Valenciana (CV) is the se…
Ecological Limits to Sustainable Use of Wood Fuels
2018
A theoretical study of a simple analytical model of biomass accumulation to assess conditions of the neutrality of CO2-emissions from burning wood (biomass) is reported. Conditions under sustainability defined with respect to harvesting are shown to satisfy requirements of CO2-neutrality on local scale while burning wood under conditions of shrinking global forest area is not and should be taken into account in the balance of global emissions. Other ecological restraints—conservation of biodiversity in particular, are discussed concerning conditions imposed by the economic system and reflecting on the visions of bio-economy.
Correlations et interpretations genetiques dans les formations recifales oxfordiennes de la haute vallee de l'Yonne (sud-est du bassin de Paris, Fran…
2001
Abstract Novel palaeoenvironmental interpretations and high-resolution correlations in Oxfordian reefal formations (fig. 1, 2) are provided by genetic stratigraphy. The main objectives of this study are: (1) to determine environmental conditions and the zonation of depositional environments; (2) to propose a genetic sequence framework and correlations of the outcrop sections; (3) to evaluate a possible tectonic control on coral buildup settlement and growth both at local scale.
Path dependency and landscape biographies in Latgale, Latvia: a comparative analysis
2010
This paper focuses on the path dependency of landscapes in Latgale, Latvia from the present perspective at the regional and local scale. During the last centuries Latvia's landscapes have passed through radical changes, which were driven by political events. Each new political era discarded the ideas of the previous era and subsequently reorganized the land(scape) according to the new views. At the regional level the role of history is significant in analyzing landscapes while at the local level the main force is people, often themselves not knowing the history of the place but putting the existing path dependency into practise or disregarding it. The biographies of two former villages are …
Semi-natural Grassland Vegetation Database of Latvia
2012
The Semi-natural Grassland Vegetation Database of Latvia (GIVD ID EU-LV-001) was first developed in 1999 as part of the PhD Thesis on syntaxonomy and diversity of dry and mesic grasslands of Latvia. The database includes the original releves established by the author as early as 1997. The majority of releves belongs to the Filipendulo-Helictotrichion (Festuco-Brometea) and Arrhenatheretalia communities, but Molinietalia, Nardetalia, Caricion nigrae, Koelerion glaucae and Plantagini-Festucion are covered, as well. The total number of releves stored is 2,500 and there are approximately 700 releves to be digitised. Plot size varies from 1 to 125 m, the majority of releves are 4-9 m large. Rele…
Local Asymptotic Normality for Shape and Periodicity in the Drift of a Time Inhomogeneous Diffusion
2017
We consider a one-dimensional diffusion whose drift contains a deterministic periodic signal with unknown periodicity $T$ and carrying some unknown $d$-dimensional shape parameter $\theta$. We prove Local Asymptotic Normality (LAN) jointly in $\theta$ and $T$ for the statistical experiment arising from continuous observation of this diffusion. The local scale turns out to be $n^{-1/2}$ for the shape parameter and $n^{-3/2}$ for the periodicity which generalizes known results about LAN when either $\theta$ or $T$ is assumed to be known.
High resolution rainfall variability in the vineyard: first results from a local scale network in Burgundy.
2012
4 pages; International audience; Rainfall is a major component of Vitivinicultural Terroirs. In many regions, it controls a large part of water intake byvine and it has an important role in diseases occurrence. Winegrowers often record rainfall with only one or a couple ofrain gauges. Such a sparse coverage might not be accurate enough to capture efficiently the spatial variability ofrainfall, which is a necessary prerequisite for efficient crop management (e.g. for irrigation or spraying decisions, etc.).In order to study high resolution variability of rainfall, we implemented a 40 tipping bucket rain gauges network over anarea of 28 km² in the hilly region of Beaune (France). The mesh siz…
Curvature and Torsion of Protein Main Chain as Local Order Parameters of Protein Unfolding
2020
International audience; Thermal protein unfolding resembles a global (two-state) phase transition. At the local scale, protein unfolding is, however, heterogeneous and probe dependent. Here, we consider local order parameters defined by the local curvature and torsion of the protein main chain. Because chemical shift (CS) measured by NMR spectroscopy is extremely sensitive to the local atomic environment, CS has served as a local probe of thermal unfolding of proteins by varying the position of the atomic isotope along the amino-acid sequence. The variation of the CS of each C(alpha) atom along the sequence as a function of the temperature defines a local heat-induced denaturation curve. We…
